“Numerical Optimization for Computational Biology”

Single particle reconstruction can be formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem.  In this talk, we show the problem can be solved by a Quasi-Newton method with relatively low computational cost. We compare the performance and accuracy of the Quasi-Newton approach with the widely used projection matching algorithm.  We also discuss the effect of noise on the derivative calculation.
