This image contains a bacteriophage found in water samples taken from Torrey Pines marshland on July 17, 2007. A bacteriophage, also commonly known as a phage, is a type of virus that infects bacteria. Phages reproduce by injecting genomic material into a host cell. Through the constant exchange of genomic material, it is believed that phages have contributed to evolution. Adella Fejeran from Mount Miguel High School and Jesus Polanco from Hilltop High School are student interns at TSRI.
