DEMONSTRATIONS

Direct Electron® DE-12 Camera System for Low-Dose TEM

Direct Electron will be demonstrating their new Direct Detection Device (DDD®) based camera system for cryo-TEM.  The camera features a 12 Million pixel direct electron detector that can operate in either electron integrating or electron counting modes.  With no scintillator to degrade performance, the system provides unprecedented sensitivity and resolution.

Presented by: Dr. Liang Jin, Direct Electron, LP, ljin@directelectron.com

Time: By appointment, please see a Direct Electron representative.

Cryoplungeâ„¢3 and Solarus® 950: A perfect duet for preparing specimens for CryoEM

Cryoplungeâ„¢3 is a semi-automated plunge freezing instrument designed to provide consistent, high quality frozen hydrated specimens for cryoEM. It incorporates a removable humidity chamber and timed single or multiple blot capabilities for 1-sided or 2-sided blotting. The ethane temperature controller maintains the ethane just above its melting point. The cryogenic workstation is designed to minimize condensation of atmospheric oxygen and water vapor onto the surface of the ethane as well as provide a protective cryo interface for transferring the specimen grid. The blotters are designed to prevent cross contamination. A filter paper loading jig eliminates the need to touch the blotting filter paper with ones hands. One press of the quick disconnect on the plunge rod allows the operator to quickly and easily remove the plunging tweezers and safely store the frozen hydrated grid within the workstation chamber. Two safety interlocks protect the user during the blotting/plunging cycle.

Time: Demonstration during Manufacturers Exhibit (Tuesday, 5:30); for groups of 6-8 at a time.

Venue: Ron Milligan's lab.

The Care and Maintenance of a Cryotransfer Holder.

If you've ever wanted to see the insides of a cryotransfer holder, understand how it works, and most importantly how to keep your holder in tip-top condition this is an opportunity to learn from an experienced holder assembler and repair engineer. A demo holder will be available for disassembly and demonstration.

Presented by: Mark Dods, Senior service engineer, Gatan Inc, mdods@gatan.com

Time: Tuesday afternoon break in CB142 meeting room.

Demonstration of Leginon

Leginon is an automated system for TEM data acquisition. Since its inception, the Leginon system has been used to acquire over one million images and has provided data for ~100 papers.

Presented by: Jim Pulokas and Anchi Cheng.

Time: Monday afternoon during the breaks.

Venue: The NRAMM control center.

Demonstration of Appion

Appion is a web-based processing pipeline that provides an interface to many software applications in common use (e.g. EMAN, Spider, Imagic, Frealign, etc.) A user manages and controls software modules via web-based forms, and all results are similarly available using web-based viewers directly linked to an underlying database which tracks and manages the data and metadata.

Presented by: Neil Voss, Dmitry Lyumkis, Anchi Cheng.

Time: Thursday afternoon during the breaks.

Venue: The NRAMM control center.

Terra Incognita. A Film from the Magic Electrons Series
